Union, Winchester and Vigliant Firefighters responded to a report of a Structure Fire at 23 Greenfield Avenue. Union crews, who were on an EMS run in the vicinity exited the building of the EMS run to find smoke conditions throughout the area. Union 9 Immediately requested Seneca Hose for their Truck 6 upon seeing the header of the fire. Union 9 Arrived, assuming Greenfield Command, and reported a well involved Barn fire with several exposures, exploding propane/gas tanks and requested an Engine from East Seneca.
Union Truck 2 arrived on scene, and stretched a 1-3/4 line to the rear yard to protect exposures as the Barn was nearly fully involved. Crews successfully protected the 4 exposure structures which sustained minimal damage while 2 - 2-1/2" lines were put in operation for fire building supression. A few minutes into the fire, an Urgent was transmitted by Truck 2 Officer, reporting imminent roof collapse of the fire structure. An alert tone was transmitted by West Seneca Fire to alert crews of the imminent roof failure.
Seneca Hose Ladder 6's master stream was put into use after the roof failure, along with the 2 2-1/2" and 1 1-3/4 lines already in operation. A partner saw and NY hooks were used to cut and pull away the sheet metal siding to expose any further hot spots.
The cause of the fire was reported to be a leaking gasoline tank on a Motorcycle, which caught a pilot light for a boiler contained in the garage. No injuries were reported.
